Left Neptune Beach yesterday morning for our travel over to Redington Shores, near Tampa, where we will spend the next nine nights. It was a long day but an interesting drive.
First we meandered down A1A through the glamorous area of Ponte Vedra where there are new million dollar homes on the water replacing the older Florida homes that first populated the area. We imagined the hold outs thumbing their noses at their new, rich neighbors.
The road from there to St. Augustine travels through the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Esturaine Research Reserve, a huge swath of undeveloped shoreline and tidal flood plains. Along the way there were houses perched precariously between the eroded beach front and A1A. We wondered how much longer they could hold on.
We headed inland at St. Augustine but not before swinging past the Castillo San Marcos, the old fort on the Mantanzas River, and the beautiful campus of Flagler college. Scott spent a lot of years in Gainesville so we headed there next to tour his old stomping grounds. After an obligatory lunch at Sonny's BBQ, we toured the neighborhood of old Gainesville where there are beautiful homes and HUGE Live Oaks.
From there we drove directly over to Tampa and our new location at Redington Shores. We have a cute little house right on the Intercoastal and a block from the beach where we can paddle board, put the jet ski in and tour by water, and generally relax. Looking forward to doing nothing and having all day to do it.
